A Small Crack in Your Windshield Can Lead to a Big Repair Bill

December 7, 2011

You’re driving on the highway listening to your favorite tunes when all of a sudden you hear a very loud pop.

A rock traveling at the speed of sound has just hit your windshield with full force. Well, maybe not that fast but fast enough to scare the hell out of you. It’s happened to all of us before.

Soon you find a small crack in your windshield and you think nothing of it. Weeks later you find the crack slowly getting bigger. But by then it’s too late and you need a new windshield.

You call a few places for a price quote and wonder why it’s so expensive to replace a windshield.

What you could have fixed for under ten dollars has now turned into a two hundred dollar repair. What a waste of money!

The moment I notice a small crack on my windshield I immediately head over to Autozone and buy one of their windshield repair kits. The kit claims to make a crack invisible but I haven’t noticed a difference the many times I’ve used it.

But I think it works because the 3 year old crack on my 1998 Camry hasn’t budged an inch yet.

If you’re too lazy to apply this kit then just remember not to defrost your windshield with hot air during the winter months. This will only expand the crack and make you hate your car.

Having a large crack on your windshield is not only unsafe for driving but it’s also illegal in many states.

Some insurance companies will actually cover this repair for free depending on the type of policy you have. So check with your insurance company first.

How long was your windshield able to withstand a crack before eventually succumbing to it?
