Rare Find – 1984 Camry Turbo Diesel

April 13, 2012

Here’s a rare find. A 1984 Toyota Camry turbo diesel with only 133K miles on the clock. It recently sold for three grand on eBay.

This Camry comes equipped with a 1.8 liter turbo diesel engine making a whopping 74 hp.

That should be enough power to lug around four adults and a suitcase. But it only weighs 2300 lbs so that should make up for the lack of horsepower.

The car looks outdated because it’s twenty eight years old. But considering its old age it appears to be in decent condition.

The turbo diesel coupled with a manual transmission is what caught my attention. You usually see this engine/transmission combo in a pickup truck or a commercial vehicle. Rarely do you see it in a passenger car.

I own a 1998 Camry V6 and I can tell you these cars are reliable. I never drove a diesel Camry but given Toyota’s reputation I would say these models are also reliable.

One thing about diesels is that you have to maintain them properly. If you don’t properly maintain a gasoline engine you’ll get premature engine wear. If you don’t properly maintain a diesel engine you’ll get premature engine failure.

So if you’re usually meticulous with car maintenance then a diesel car may be right for you. Otherwise stick to gasoline engines because they’re much more forgiving.

Three thousand dollars for a car this old may not seem cheap but as long as the diesel engine was maintained properly it can be considered barely broken in.

Currently diesel prices are about 30 cents higher than regular gasoline but the mileage you get out of diesel engines will save you money in the long run.

I have never owned a diesel and know they can be expensive to repair. If I had three grand and were in the market for a used car I would be safe and go with a Honda or Toyota.

What about you readers out there? Any of you own a diesel and what is your experience with the car?

If you were in the market for a used car, would you buy this Camry for 3K?

I’ve driven Toyota Camrys and I have mixed feelings for them. As Toyotas go, they’re as reliable as cars can get. They’re good looking vehicles. They’re roomy, they’re comfortable to ride in. I’ve never driven or owned a Camry Turbo Diesel, so I have no experience with maintenance. My only complaint with Camrys is that they’re front-wheel drive. Call me old fashioned, but I’ve always preferred rear-wheel drive cars. Other than that, Toyota Camrys are great cars to own.
