Going Metro

April 8, 2011

The Geo Metro was a car made by GM in the late 80s to early 90s. These cars were known for their cheap prices and high fuel efficiency.

The early Metros had a 3 cylinder engine and got excellent gas mileage, and I do mean excellent. These cars got up to 58 miles per gallon but since gas was still cheap in the 90s these cars did not receive the recognition they deserved.

GM introduced the Metro to the public a little too early, about 20 years too early. I remember people would laugh at these cars because they were so small, especially the tiny hatchback.

Well laugh no more. These cars are going well above retail thanks to the ever increases in gas prices.

They are simple cars which means that you can probably repair a lot of things yourself. Even if you took it to a mechanic the bill would be relatively low compared to other cars.

I sometimes wonder why GM doesn’t bring these cars back to the market. I mean 58 miles per gallon, who couldn’t use a car like that these days? Forget about the expensive and complex hybrid machines, bring back the Metro.
