Craigslist can be a great way to find cheap cars but there are many scams that you have to be aware of. There are many dealers out there that pose as individual owners. These dealers take pictures of their cars in public spaces such as parking lots. Many of the cars don’t even have license plates. Remember that most real owners take pictures of their cars in front of their homes with a real license plate attached to the car.

Then you’ll see listings that are ultra cheap. I once saw a 2004 BMW M3 with low miles for $2500. Now you know the seller isn’t going to let the car go for $2500. If the deal seems to good to be true then it usually is. Don’t even waste your time on these listings.

Always buy locally. I’ve heard many horror stories where the buyer wired the money to the seller and never heard back. All money transactions and title signings should be done face to face.

Serious motivated sellers will give detailed information about the car from any history of accidents to when the last major maintenance was performed. These sellers are also the most willing to be negotiable because they have better things to do with their time.
